Artistic Director of Expanded Programs
MTC’s Expanded Programs encompasses Education, Outreach, and programming aimed at non-traditional audiences, including youth, young adults, young professionals, multi-ethnic audiences, and audiences from socioeconomic areas that do not have professional arts programming in their communities.
All populations of Marin County residents will have access to arts education and theatrical performances through MTC's Expanded Programs.

Student Matinees
There is nothing like the power of live theatre, and MTC's 2007-2008 season brings you stories that revel in the strength of the human heart. Student matinee performances with special discounted pricing are available for all our productions, including the swashbuckling Lovers and Executioners in November and December of 2007, and the American classic A Streetcar Named Desire in April of 2008 (student matinee performances Apr 3 11am and April 15 11am).
MTC provides Discovery Guides filled with information and ideas for classroom exercises that put the play in context and prepare students to see the production. To get an even deeper look at the play, MTC can send a teaching artist into the classroom before and after the performance, to help the classroom teacher integrate the play into the regular school curriculum. This integration can be designed to meet California and NCLB standards.
Email education@marintheatre.org for more information.
Teen Advisory Board
Marin Theatre Company’s Teen Advisory Board is a group of passionate and dedicated middle and high school students who serve as ambassadors between MTC and the teen community in Marin County. Teen Board members produce SceneFest– MTC’s yearly acting competition for teens – as well as help plan MTC’s summer camps, observe rehearsals for MTC mainstage productions, participate in advanced acting lessons, attend monthly meetings, and receive free tickets to MTC productions. Want to join the Teen Advisory Board? Email education@marintheatre.org.
Teachers' Night Out
Teachers from Marin County public and private schools are invited to attend a free pre-show discussion and performance at MTC, where they are given study guides and opportunities to speak with the artistic staff in an effort to help teachers to incorporate theatre into their curriculum. Marin County teachers email education@marintheatre.org to be invited to Teachers' Night Out.
MTC in the Schools [LINK]
MTC brings professional instructors into schools around Marin County for drama classes either afterschool or as an addition to the regular curriculum. Students engage their imaginations as actors or playwrights, learning to express themselves creatively while building self-esteem. Recent schools include MLK and Bayside in Marin City, San Rafael High, Edna Maguire in Mill Valley (through Mill Valley Parks and Rec), and Marin Country Day School. Special final sessions will be held at MTC’s Lieberman Theatre in Mill Valley, where students from MTC drama classes at different elementary schools come together to share in the creation of a theatrical event.
Afterschool Classes [LINK]
MTC now offers afterschool drama classes with open enrollment through Mill Valley Parks and Rec’s Enrichment Program, in addition to ongoing afterschool programs at specific schools.
To participate in our open enrollment afterschool drama classes, visit millvalleycenter.org for an Activities Guide and registration forms. Classes for grades 1-5 are available immediately after school at Strawberry, Park, Old Mill, and Edna Maguire, and at 4:30pm Thursdays at the Mill Valley Community Center starting in January 2008. A class for grades 6-8 will be available in January 2008, Tuesdays 4:30pm at Mill Valley Middle (you do not have to be a student at MVM to enroll).
School Tour [LINK]
Science is all about YOU! That's the message of A Short History of Nearly Everything, a fun, fast, and fascinating romp through the world of science. Marin Theatre Company is bringing Lauren Gunderson's stage adaptation of Bill Bryson's bestselling book to middle and high schools around Marin County and the Bay Area. Black holes, quantum mechanics, and evolution have never been so funny, so personal, and so much fun. The 50-minute performance for up to 299 students will be followed by workshops with the actors, getting the students involved and engaged in the world of science.
The Canal Project [LINK]
American Triage is the working title of a new play by Marisela Treviño Orta, telling the story of two San Rafael teenagers whose parents are deported in the recent immigration raids. MTC commissioned Ms. Orta to teach a bilingual playwriting class at San Rafael High and to write the play, which will be presented this Winter at MTC and at the Pickleweed Community Center in San Rafael.
Internships [LINK]
MTC's internships are designed to provide experience and preparation for beginning a career in the professional theatre. Interns work closely with members of MTC's artistic and administrative staff, attending departmental meetings, interacting with patrons, and taking on real responsibilities in connection with MTC's programs and productions. In addition, interns participate in special workshops and seminars and attend theatrical performances around the Bay Area.
SceneFest [LINK]
Students from Marin County High Schools are invited to present their scenes and monologues in a constructive, learning-oriented acting competition. Prizes include discounts on MTC Conservatory tuition and free tickets to MTC productions. The event, open to the public, is held every Spring and includes a discussion led by MTC’s new Artistic Director, Jasson Minadakis.
Peter J. Owens Scholarship Fund
Scholarships are offered each year to students from economically disadvantaged areas (including Marin City and the Canal District) so that they can participate in MTC's educational programs.
Me and My Shadow
Students are invited to follow MTC staff members as they go about their day-to-day work in an effort to present students with an "insider" view of the daily operations of a professional theatre company.
In My Own Words
Senior citizens learn basic playwriting skills while working on an autobiographical one-act play. Teenagers (after school outreach students) are brought in two weeks before the session ends as 'cast' members along with professional directors. The teenagers perform the elders play (blocked staged reading) for an audience of friends and family.
