EXTENDED THROUGH JUNE 27
Legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie wrote songs about hard times-the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, high unemployment, and war. But he also sang about the joy of being alive and being an American. This stirring musical follows Guthrie as he rambles coast to coast from California to the New York Islands, and features over two dozen of his most famous songs, including Bound for Glory and This Land Is Your Land.
MTC's cast for WOODY GUTHRIE'S AMERICAN SONG includes the complete cast from the 2008 Colorado Shakespeare Festival's production - all new to MTC: Lisa Asher, Sam Misner, Matthew Mueller, and Megan Pearl Smith. Berwick Haynes returns to MTC and rounds out the cast. Enhancing the performance will be three musicians, including band leader Tony Marcus.

“As Woody says himself in the various voices of the cast, the songs are taken from the voice of real Americans. Once put to music, the people need to take them back, and sing them with all their hearts. In Woody Guthrie's American Song, you'll want to sing along from beginning to end.”

“One of the best shows that I have ever seen! A superb cast of 8 singers and musicians have been perfectly directed by Peter Glazer. They enter the stage and hold you in the palms of their hands for a marvelous evening of musical entertainment. You honestly can't stop your hands from clapping and your toes from tapping with this great music of Americana. I urge you to see WOODY GUTHRIE'S AMERICAN SONG now appearing at the Marin Theatre Company. It's a must-see! I give it a big rating of 10-plus.”
“A terrific tribute, rousing songs, wonderful voices . . . fills us all with appreciation of this great American artist . . . you'll leave humming the songs . . . and feeling proud of this great American man of song and social conscious . . . a great production with beautiful voices, really fine musicians and a story to tell about a great American.”
“THE CAST of "Woody Guthrie's American Song" was rehearsing the song "Deportees" when I arrived at the Marin Theatre Company in Mill Valley one afternoon last week.
The tight vocal harmonies, the sound of acoustic guitars, mandolin and banjo and standup bass filled the rehearsal hall, and the lyrics, about the inhumane treatment of Mexican migrant workers, rang uncomfortably true, especially in light of this "show-us-your-papers" business in Arizona.
"It's 600 hundred miles to the Mexican border, and they chased them like rustlers, like outlaws, like thieves," the cast sang. As I listened, I thought those words could have been written yesterday.
In the 1930s and '40s, the itinerant Guthrie wrote immortal songs about immigration, hard economic times, joblessness, war. Kind of like now.”
