Contemporary American Theatre
September 18 – November 6 (8 weeks)
Registration Deadline: Monday, September 11
Have you ever wondered how we got from Eugene O'Neill to Tracy Letts? Or what the shared tradition is between classic American dramatists like Thornton Wilder, Tennessee Williams and William Inge and the hot young writers that are taking contemporary stages by storm? In this six-week class, you'll read six new plays by the most exciting new writers for the American stage. Led by MTC’s Artistic Staff, you will be given an excerpt from a classic American play and a new script by a contemporary writer. We will discuss how the earlier piece informs the latter, how traditions are built on over time to create new methods of storytelling, and how drama has evolved under the influence of new media.
